Special Exhibition

Eshi 100 - Contemporary Japanese Illustration in Kyoto

Since the ukiyo-e artists of the Edo period, illustrators active in fields as varied as manga, anime and games, and illustrations for novellas have been called "Eshi". The style they have created is part of Japanese popular culture, and is drawing attention around the world.

Here at the Kyoto International Manga Museum, for our Spring special exhibition, we have gathered illustrations by 105 artists who worked with the theme "Japan", and are exhibiting them in the exhibition "Eshi 100 - Contemporary Japanese Illustration in Kyoto". It is a powered-up version of the exhibition "Eshi 100" held in the fall of 2011 in Akihabara, Tokyo.

10 am - 6 pm (Admission to the museum is until 5:30 pm)

Closed on Wednesdays *Except for 5/2
( If Wednesday is a national holiday, the following Thursday.)

Admission Fee

Special exhibition fee: 1000yen for adults, 500yen for middle school students, 100yen for elementary school students.

*This also covers the entrance fee to the museum (800yen for adults, 300yen for middle school students, 100yen for elementary school students).

*Special tickets featuring illustrations by the exhibiting artists will be on sale at the museum from February 24.

*You cannot combine this ticket with other discounts or coupons.

*Citizens of the Kyoto city get a 20% discount until 3/31 after providing proof of address.

Exhibition content

  • - 105 pictures drawn by Eshi, based on the theme "Japan"
  • - "Moe okoshi" related materials and an introduction to how they are used in various places, such as regional development, and more material relevant to the exhibiting authors from the holdings of the museum (about 30 items).

From April 24, we exhibit video and works by two artists when we had talk & live drawing event "Nishimata Aoi and Ekusa Takahito Eshi draw and talk about characters and the world" on March 17.

Sale of catalogue and merchandize

During the exhibition we are selling an original catalogue of the art in the exhibition (2500 yen), and merchandize that was available during the exhibition in Akihabara, like tapestries, posters, straps and more, but also merchandize exclusively for the exhibition in Kyoto, like postcards, clear files, and tumblers. You can find it all in the Museum shop, please have a look!

Special Anniversary Event: Talk & Live Drawing
Nishimata Aoi and Ekusa Takahito Eshi draw and talk about characters and the world

We welcome two exhibiting artists of the "Eshi 100 -- Contemporary Japanese Illustration in Kyoto"exhibition, Nishimata Aoi and Ekusa Takahito, to talk about the process of drawing the illustrations in the exhibition, and about how 'Moe' characters they draw are used to promote local industries ("moe okoshi"). They will also do live drawing, so the audience can see exactly how they create their illustration.

Everyone who buys a catalogue of the [Eshi 100 -- Contemporary Japanese Design in kyoto] Exhibition on the day of the event, can line up for a ticket. The first fifty (hundred total) for each will be able to get an autograph from either Nishimata or Ekusa.

  • If more people line up before 10 am, it is possible that we stop distributing tickets before this time.
  • To make sure the largest amount of people possible can participate in this event, only one ticket per person will be handed out. After you receive your ticket, please tell staff which illustrator you would like an autograph of.

Please keep in mind that you can only have the catalogue signed. Please do not bring anything else. The autograph will be dedicated to the name you sign up with.

There are many color illustrations in the exhibition. You can try and make these through both analog and digital means, using professional tools and techniques used by real Eshi.
