Special Exhibition:
Saibara Rieko Exhibition
25 year anniversary of a manga artist's career

Saibara Reiko is a manga artists working in mainstream gag manga that are based on real-life observations. The most consistent criticism her works receive is that they have a "lust for candor" and are "undecorated". They express her personality as it is, using what is fundamentally an exceedingly rough design, she herself purports is "unskilled". However, it is this very nature which allows her work to convey the themes she wants while appealing directly to her readers. This exhibition commemorates the 25th year anniversary of her work as a manga artist and will exhibit valuable original artworks, as well as other materials such as reference photographs etc.

Manga like this which are based on such devoted data collection is fascinating for many readers. This room introduces Saibara's report manga, with photos from her journeys and personal experiences.

Children's Time

Saibara's works are lyrical like picture books and she projects some of her own childhood experiences into her art. She depicts things that can only be seen by children, times of childhood that are like treasures, as well as times that are a little cruel in reality as the environment children are born into can force them to grow up before there time. This corner introduces these types of Saibara's works alongside photos from her childhood.

Blue Skies, the Seaside and Mountains

Saibara was born and raised in a fishing town called Uraga, in Kochi prefecture. It is not a rich area, but it has blue skies, seaside and mountains. Sometimes sceneries from Saibara's home town appear in her manga. This space creates the feeling of having stepped into one of her works.
