Black Jack Stories; Doctors' Choice

Beginning its run on the weekly Shonen Champion in 1973, Black Jack, known as the quintessential medical manga series ― where author Tezuka Osamuwhere author Tezuka Osamu poured his knowledge of being a holder of a medical degree (M.D.) ― still is widely read and loved by so many even after 40 plus years. And of course that is not an exception among practicing doctors as well. This exhibition, here at the Kyoto International Manga Museum, has been curated to showcase those doctors' thoughts and feelings, along with memorable scenes from Black Jack.

  • 16 memorable Black Jack scenes selected by practicing doctors

    Showcasing panels depicting selected scenes with comments by leading doctors in the field
  • Manuscript of Black Jack REAL - Kandou no Iryou Taikendan, "Black Jack Real; true and inspiring medical experiences" by Miura Mitsuru (The Kabocha Wain, "The Pumpkin Wine")

    Showcasing the 32 page manuscript (copied) of the fifth episode of Black Jack Real; Mamoritaimono, "What We Wish to Keep"

    About Black Jack Real--true and inspiring medical experiences

    Black Jack Real is a collection of short comic stories based on true inspiring events experienced by medical practitioners, written and illustrated in commemoration of 40th anniversary of the birth of Black Jack, by 6 artists including Ishizaka Kei (Kiss yori Kantan, "Easier than Kissing"), Kotani Kenichi (Tenisu Boi, "Tennis Boy"), and J Watabe Jun (Remon Enjeru, "Lemmon Angel"), who all were former assistants to Tezuka during the creation of Black Jack.

  • Top 40 Most Popular Black Jack Stories

    Showcasing panels introducing the top 40 stories selected by readers from the survey held in 2013 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Black Jack.
  • Photo Opportunity

    Take a commemorative photo with Black Jack in the area with the authentic re-creation of the operation room. Costumes such as operating gowns are available without rental fees.
  • Exhibition of Medical History

    Displaying a few valuable medical devices from early Showa era in conjunction with the Exhibition of Medical History, which will be held at the Kyoto University Museum (Sakyo-ku, Kyoto city) from February 11th to April 12th, 2015 as a part of the exhibition projects of The 29th General Assembly of the Japan Medical Congress 2015 Kansai.
