| April 2003 : | Project to create a manga museum is proposed to the city of Kyoto by Kyoto Seika University. | |
| December 2003 : | Basic agreement on cooperation between Kyoto City and Kyoto Seika University reached. | |
| October 2004 : | Launch of the project announced by the mayor of Kyoto City at a regular press conference. | |
| December 2004 : | Discussion forum for the "Kyoto International Manga Museum Project" (tentative name) held. | |
| October 2005 : | Plan to use the site of the former Tatsuike Primary
School approved by the Committee on the Use of Former Primary School Sites in Downtown Kyoto. |

| October 2006 : | Official name and logo for the museum decided. | |
| November 2006 : | Kyoto International Manga Museum opens. | |
| May 2007 : | Visitors to the museum reached 100,000. | |
| November 2007 : | Visitors to the museum reached 500,000. | |
| December 2009 : | Visitors to the museum reached 800,000. | |
| August 2010 : | Visitors to the museum reached 1,000,000. | |
| July 2011 : | Restaurant renovation. |
