KAMEN RIDER ART GALLERY Exhibition
- Message from SHOTARO ISHINOMORI

In 2011, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the birth of a national hero, "Kamen Rider". Today, Kamen Rider is still working in television and movies, and is still captivating the imaginations of children, of course, and also those of adults.

The aim of this exhibition is to show visitors the origins of immensely popular world of Kamen Rider, by introducing the work of Ishinomori Shotaro, a 'comprehensive artist', and the creator of Kamen Rider.

We hope that visitors will be able to understand Ishinomori's message, directly through original panels of the manga Kamen Rider drawn by Ishinomori, valuable rough sketches of the characters of Kamen Rider and its monsters, and indirectly through nostalgic and relevant documents and other magazines published at the same time, and manuscripts from contemporary mangaka that have inherited Ishinomori's 'Kamen Rider Tamashii (Spirit)' (Kamen Rider's soul and spirit)

What is 'comprehensive art'?
In 1989, Ishinomori Shotaro, who was always on the frontier of manga expression, drawing everything from flowing shojo manga over SF manga to experimental manga and didactic manga for adults, published a "Manga Manifest", in which he advocated the manga medium and declared manga a medium in which everything can be drawn, hence a comprehensive art. That is why in this exhibition, following Ishinomori's manifesto, we refer to manga as a comprehensive art.

イメージ

Real name: Onodera Shotaro. Manga Artist. Born January 25, 1938 in Tome-gun (now Tome city), Miyagi Prefecture.

In 1954, while in high school, he debuted in "Nikyu Tenshi" (second-rate angel). Upon graduating high school he went to Tokyo, and started working as a manga artist.

He is also known as the writer of the live-action SFX series, "Kamen Rider" (masked rider), and worked on manga and film simultaneously, as a pioneer in the mixed media genre. Later he would call himself a 'comprehensive artist' rather than a manga artist. During a period of over 45 years, he worked on the forefront of the many genres that cover creating images, exploring all options available to him as a comprehensive artist.

His major works include "Cyborg 009", "Kamen Rider", "Sabu to Ichi torimonohikae" (Sabu & Ichi's arrest warrent), and Manga Nihon no rekishi (A manga history of Japan), among others. He passed away in 1998. In 2006, Kadokawa shoten published 770 of his works in 500 volumes, including a compilation called "Ishinomori Shotaro Manga Daizenshu" (The great and complete collected works of Ishinomori Shotaro), which made him the author that holds the Guinness Book of World Records' record for the largest amount of published comic books by a single author.
