Atelier Kin Gogo: The Creative Activity Project at the Kuretake School for the Challenged of Kyoto City

At Kyoto International Manga Museum, the potential of manga is studied from various angles, and the results of this research have been provided to the public as lectures and exhibitions.

In this exhibition we introduce the creative activities, and processes, of the students at the Kuretake School for the Challenged of Kyoto City.

"Kin Gogo", meaning golden afternoon, stands for Friday afternoon, when the students at the Kuretake School have class that allows them to be freely creative. We hope the artwork displayed within this exhibition will provide visitors with an occasion to consider the act of creation, including the creation of manga.

About the Kuretake School for the Challenged of Kyoto City

A special school established in April of 1958 for children with disabilities, it became Kyoto Municipal Kuretake Support School for the Handicapped during the 2004 reorganisation of the Kyoto Municipal School for the Handicapped.

Supporting a flexible framework to aid in living with disabilities, it functions as a 'regional integrated support school' and offers an extensive educational program to children with a broad range of disabilities.

In April of 2007 after an amendment in School Education Law, the school was renamed the Kuretake School for the Challenged of Kyoto City. The school, alongside the Hagukumi Support Center, established in 2002, has been functioning as a regional consultation center for comprehensive education that focuses on aiding individual development.

Through appointment of the Ministry of Education, the school is currently implementing new initiatives to continue fostering the talents, abilities and interests of children with disabilities.

About the classes at "Atelier Kin Gogo"

At the Kuretake School for the Challenged of Kyoto City, classes around writing and creation are seen as very important to bring out the children's individuality through creative activities. Most of the works presented in this exhibition were made during these classes which are scheduled on Friday afternoon and called "Atelier Kin Gogo". The school hopes that these creative activities will help lead to a life in which the students can express themselves without hesitation.

During classes, to create a comfortable atmosphere for all students alike, they are presented and with subjects, techniques, and material to choose from themselves, and rather than focusing on technical guidance, the focus is on creating an environment that promotes the students engaging in independent activities.

Initially some students weren't very good at self-expression, but gradually they discovered creative ways suited to themselves, and now most of these students look forward to Friday's golden afternoons.
